If you are running Local Service Ads (also known as Google Guaranteed ads), you know how the dashboard looks — it features your leads, your budget, and your Google Verified badge.
But that’s about to change.
Google just announced a major shift to how Google local ads work behind the scenes; including where you manage campaigns, how your budget is calculated, and what bidding options you have.
Before you panic, let’s walk through exactly what’s happening and what to do about it. Then we’ll back up and cover what Google Local Services Ads actually are, for anyone newer to this corner of Google Ads.
Here’s the headline: Google is folding Local Services Ads into the broader Google Ads platform. Instead of the standalone Local Services Ads dashboard, you’ll manage everything, budgets, targeting, leads, and replies, directly inside Google Ads.
Google is doing this by migrating existing accounts into Performance Max campaigns with pay-per-lead goals. Performance Max has been a core Google Ads campaign category for years, and pay-per-lead billing is exactly how Local Services Ads has always worked.
What’s new is combining the two: your pay-per-lead account now runs on Google Ads’ Performance Max infrastructure instead of the standalone Local Services Ads dashboard.
What’s not changing:
So the core promise of Local Services Ads, pay-per-lead, high-intent placements, no keyword bidding, stays intact. What’s changing is where you manage it and some of the mechanics behind the scenes.
A few of these changes require action on your part before your account migrates.
Here’s the breakdown.
Because you’re going to be managing all aspects of your ads in this new way, historical performance reports won’t carry over automatically. Download that data before your migration date.
Once you migrate, the old dashboard becomes inaccessible and redirects straight to Google Ads.
Bidding is shifting to standard Google Ads models:
Here’s a change that puts more control in your hands: You can now edit the phone number your leads route to directly, in real time, right from Google Ads. That’s a genuine upgrade from the old process.
Your business name, address, and hours sync one-way from your Google Business Profile into Google Ads. Update those details in your profile, not your ad account.
Heads up: significant changes to your name or address trigger a standard verification review. That typically takes 24 to 48 hours and can temporarily pause your campaign. Photos and service areas are pre-filled but can be customized independently.
Better Business Bureau callouts are being deprecated. If you’ve been using one, it currently shows up as a small trust signal on your ad, something like “BBB Accredited Business.”
Losing it won’t break your ad, it’ll still run just fine. But without a replacement, your ad simply shows fewer of these trust signals than it used to, possibly fewer than the competitor’s ad sitting right next to yours.
That’s why Google recommends selecting at least six other structured callouts instead, things like your business hours, specialties, or accepted payment methods. Take a few minutes before your migration date to pick your six, so your ad keeps making the same strong first impression it always has.
The rollout is phased, not all at once:
With the update covered, let’s zoom out. If you’re newer to Local Services Ads, or evaluating whether they belong in your marketing mix, here’s the full picture.
In simple words, Google local services ads are Google’s way of connecting local service providers (home services, wellness services, legal services, tutoring, automotive, etc.) with people actively searching for help. They generate qualified leads through calls and messages, not just website visits.

Here’s where they show up: at the very top of google search results, often above the regular google ads and organic listings. You’ll also spot them in Google Maps for many service categories. They carry a “Sponsored” label but feel very native and trust-driven compared to standard paid ads.
A typical LSA unit displays your business name, star rating and review count from google reviews, your city or service areas, a phone or “Call” button, business hours, and the google verified badge. Consumers can view business hours, reviews, and contact providers directly from search results. No extra clicks needed.
What makes this different from the organic results (or commonly known as the Local Pack)?
LSAs are paid placements focused on leads, not clicks. Organic Local Pack is driven by local SEO signals. LSAs sit above both, giving you prime real estate.
LSAs are tailored for in-person service providers in specific industries-businesses that rely on inbound phone calls and booked jobs. If you’re a tire shop, a real estate agent, or a home services provider who wants more jobs from local customers, this is built for you.
E-commerce or product-only businesses? Not so much.
Here’s the simple flow of how google service ads actually work:
What counts as a “qualified lead”?
Google defines five ways:
LSAs connect verified businesses with ready-to-buy customers, and LSAs eliminate the need for manual keyword management by automating ads based on search queries.
Google automatically generates matches between searches and your chosen service categories (without a keyword-list to manage).

LSAs provide detailed lead tracking and management tools. All communication including, phone calls, voicemail, messages, and booking forms is tracked inside your dashboard. Once the migration is complete, the updated Google Ads platform will allow businesses to manage leads and budgets from a single dashboard.
Google Local Services Ads are available only for eligible service categories and regions, and availability keeps expanding year by year.
Broad categories of eligible industries include:
Exact eligibility varies by country and even by region within a country. Local Services Ads are available in multiple countries including the US and UK, with ongoing expansion. To check eligibility, visit Google’s official Local Services Ads onboarding page and enter your business registration details.
Google ranks Local Services Ads through an auction. The highest ranked ads show first, and two things drive that ranking: your bid and your overall profile quality.
1) Your bid.
This is the maximum you’re willing to pay for a lead, though you may end up paying less. Google recommends the “Maximize Leads” bid mode, which lets Google set your bid to get you the most leads for your budget.
2) How likely your ad is to result in a lead.
This depends on a few things:
3) Your profile quality.
This includes your review rating, number of reviews, average response time, use of high-quality photos, and your Google Verified status. Higher-quality profiles tend to rank higher and can even pay lower costs per lead.
Google also optimizes rankings for the overall health of the Local Services ecosystem, giving all providers a fair shot rather than letting the highest bidders dominate every search. One more detail worth knowing: if your business has multiple locations serving the same area, Google only shows the highest-ranking one for a given search.

While your ad budget and effective max cost per lead matter (especially as LSAs integrate into Performance Max auction) simply outspending competitors does not guarantee top spots. Ad ranking depends on a balanced combination of budget, reviews, and responsiveness.
Quick optimization tips: improve your response time metric, regularly ask happy customers for reviews, avoid disputing valid leads just to save money (Google notices), and fine-tune service areas so leads are easier to serve quickly.
Google is changing where and how you manage Local Services Ads, not the product’s core value. You’ll still pay for leads instead of clicks, still show up keywordless in top local placements, and your Google Verified badge still carries the same weight.
The real work on your end is preparation: know your migration window, back up your data, and get your bidding strategy ready for a platform that works a little differently than what you’re used to.
This migration is one piece of a much bigger picture. We manage Google Ads accounts across every campaign type, Local Services included, and we live in these platforms every day for clients across paid search, paid social, and everything in between.
If you want a second set of eyes on your Local Services Ads setup before your migration date arrives, or you’re looking for a partner to run your Google Ads and paid advertising strategy more broadly, we’re happy to take a look at your specific situation.
Will I lose my existing Local Services Ads data when everything moves into Google Ads?
Not entirely. Your profile settings, targeting, and verification status migrate automatically into the new Performance Max for pay-per-lead campaigns. Your past customer lead history, including contact details, message threads, and call recordings, also transfers automatically and stays accessible in the new Lead Manager.
What doesn’t carry over is your historical performance reporting: past impressions, clicks, weekly spend, and ad-level reports. Export those from your Local Services Ads dashboard before your migration date. Google sends an advance notice 14 days before your scheduled migration, plus a dashboard banner and a follow-up reminder a week later, so you’ll have plenty of warning.
Do I need a Google Business Profile to run LSAs now?
Yes, and it matters more than it used to. After migration, your business name, address, and hours sync automatically, in one direction, from your Google Business Profile into Google Ads.
Keep your profile accurate. Minor updates, like hours or phone number changes, sync within 24 hours. Significant changes to your business name, storefront address, or primary category trigger a verification review that can temporarily pause your local service ads campaign for 24 to 48 hours while Google confirms the update.
Can I run Local Services Ads if I don’t have a physical storefront?
Yes. Local Services Ads have always supported service-area businesses that travel to customers rather than operate out of a storefront. You can hide your address and set a service area instead, as long as your business and category are eligible in your region.
Google’s migration timeline confirms this group specifically: service-area businesses without physical storefronts are included in the “Late 2026” migration phase, alongside accounts running custom bidding or booking setups.
How long until my campaign performance stabilizes after migrating?
Google says to expect up to two weeks for the migration process to fully complete and for your campaign’s performance to ramp back to stable levels. Many ads keep running right away, but don’t judge performance changes during that window. Some fluctuation is normal while the new campaign settles in.
Are Local Services Ads worth it for small or new businesses?
Google’s migration announcement doesn’t address this, so consider this our take rather than an official answer. Local Services Ads tend to work well for small and new businesses because you only pay for valid leads, not clicks. Results improve when you respond to leads quickly, build reviews early, and set a realistic starting budget.
