The final countdown to 2020 is just 37 days away! So, yes. The answer is yes we podcast. 32% of Americans listen to the 750,000+ podcasts that are currently active once a month. But, why does this mean anything to you in the marketing world?
Did you know: Ben Hammersley is the OG behind the word “podcast”. In 2004 Hammersley suggested the word “pod” when referring to the iPod… remember those? 😬#BackInTheDay and “cast” taken from the term Radio broadcast. Kind of a cool fun fact! You are welcome. 😉

What to Listen To?

“Hey, Lauren, what podcasts are you listening to?”

Oh, that question is all the rage during networking events, on client calls and I have even been known to flip the question and leverage this simple question during contractor interviews. You’d be surprised by how much you can learn about someone when you discover the mix of podcasts they subscribe to!

And, it’s a fun unexpected question to pop into actual business-related questions during a discovery call. Try it sometime. I double-dog dare you.

So, what am I listening to? I, of course, have marketing related pods that I listen to on a weekly basis. Below are just a few of my favorites…

  • Marketing School, hosted by Neil Patel & Eric Siu covering topics including SEO, content marketing tips and diving into all things related to growing your business. Be sure to check out this podcast for tactics, tips, tools and some inspiration that will get you thinking.
  • Baby Got Bot hosted by Kelly Noble Mirabella is a solid gold resource for all things Chatbots – tutorials, tips, and trends. The future is chatbots, so dig into this podcast and hit subscribe.

Of course, there are non-related marketing podcasts that I catch when I have time that falls into the typical categories, like comedy, murder mystery & crime, entrepreneurship, business and more.

We all have our guilty pleasures, so mix it up with self-education and fun podcasts that get your brains moving.

Leveraging Podcasting in Marketing

Why are we leveraging podcasts in marketing? This obvious answer starts with monetizing episodes via sponsorships, donations, crowdfunding, patreons, affiliate links, paid content and selling merchandise.

In addition to the monetary side, a podcast is a fantastic and easy way to drive traffic to your website with a podcast transcript in the form of a blog and/or featured along with the podcast episode.

So, we have the audio, content copy and we can’t forget the video logistics of the episode. Turn your audio into video. But, why? By nature we are visual people, your fan base will expand with your podcast on your YouTube page as well. Google estimates over 1.9 billion people log into YouTube every month. You need to be in front of that audience. It’s an easy given.

A podcast is additional content that you want to get in front of your fans. Having a podcast elevates your trust factor with current and future clients and proves the power of value that your fans need to see from you.

Many of our clients have in-person events with their fans where they record a podcast in front of a crowd, feature delicious treats and engage in person with their clients, prospects, and fans.
